As John Lennon famously once said, “Before Elvis, there was nothing.”
And as we here in Memphis say… since Elvis, there’s been everything!
Since we're known as the “Birthplace of Rock 'n Roll” we know a thing or two about music, and there’s no one here whose life hasn’t been influenced by The King. From Jailhouse Rock to Love Me Tender, we're proud to live and breathe Elvis.
Visitors to Memphis have long made the near-holy pilgrimage to Graceland, entering through the heavy iron gates with a sense of the grand life Elvis lived. Since its doors opened to the public in 1982 there’s been so much to explore and discover throughout the mansion and grounds, inviting dedicated fans to visit time and time again.
But – hold on to your blue suede shoes, folks – this coming weekend is the event we’ve been waiting for. With the grand opening from March 2nd to March 5th, we're celebrating the grand opening of the new, $45 million dollar, 200,000 square foot entertainment complex known as “Elvis Presley’s Memphis!” And, the best part is, our convenient location at the Crowne Plaza Memphis Downtown is just a few short miles from this much-anticipated new attraction.
While Graceland (located across the street) will continue to tell the personal side of Elvis’s life, the new Elvis Presley’s Memphis finally sheds light on the rest of the story. From the birth of rock n’ roll through the burgeoning music industry, the artists who influenced and shaped The King’s own music and the American culture surrounding it all, visitors now get to experience what he experienced himself.
As Graceland.com writes, “Guests will fully immerse themselves in his life and career like never before -- his roots, his influences and his artistry.” Wander through the Elvis Career Museum, wonder at his Automobile and Custom Jet Museum, enjoy the pop culture exhibits, restaurants and retail shops – and then refuel with an iconic meal at the on-site restaurants.
Climb aboard his customized jet named "Lisa Marie," stroll down re-created streets of his life, and gaze at 20 of his collectible vintage automobiles. While the opening weekend extravaganza features an all-star musical lineup, visitors are welcomed year-round to experience for themselves the majestic life of our true American King.
